Seven spice organizers side by side, with the listed dimensions and capacity that decide which suits a drawer, cabinet, wall or counter.

Spice storage goes wrong in one of two ways. Either the bottles live in a cabinet where the labels face the wall, or they take over a counter you wanted for chopping. The fix depends on where the space is: a drawer, a cabinet shelf, a wall, or open counter. This page lines up seven organizers by the numbers their makers publish, so you can match a size to a spot before you buy anything.

Most of these makers state a size but not a bottle count, so where a capacity is missing from the table, it is because the maker doesn’t give one. In that case, work out how many bottles you need to store and compare it with the listed footprint.

The products one by one

SpiceStack 18 Bottle: for a cabinet or pantry shelf

SpiceStack® Spice Organizer, 18 BottleSee it at youcopia.com

The SpiceStack® Spice Organizer, 18 Bottle works by drawers rather than tiers. Three pull-down drawers bring 18 or more spices (the bottles aren’t included) to eye level, and adjustable dividers let you set the height for round or square bottles. Non-slip feet hold it in place, and it comes with 104 removable drawer labels. There is nothing to install or assemble. The maker says it organizes spice bottles in a cabinet or pantry.

It measures 11.0 inches deep, 8.1 inches wide and 8.3 inches tall (27.9 x 20.6 x 21.1 cm), so it needs a shelf at least 11 inches (28 cm) deep and at least 8.3 inches (21.1 cm) of clear height. It is made of BPA-free recycled plastic in speckled white.

SpiceLiner: for a drawer you already have

SpiceLiner® Spice Drawer Organizer, SandstoneSee it at youcopia.com

The SpiceLiner® Spice Drawer Organizer, Sandstone isn’t a rack at all. It is a roll of soft foam that you measure and cut with scissors to make a custom spice drawer; a measuring tape is included. Bottles lie flat on top, and the maker says that suits round, square, tall and small bottles better than angled trays do. The foam keeps bottles from shifting when the drawer opens and closes, and the maker lists 30 or more bottles for the drawer you create.

The roll is 120.0 inches long (about 10 feet, or 304.8 cm), 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) wide and 0.3 inches (0.8 cm) thick. It is non-toxic and wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Yumi 3-Tier: for the counter, the wall or inside a cabinet

The Yumi 3-Tier Spice Rack is a steel rack that keeps small jars and bottles in view so labels stay visible at a glance. The maker says you can set it on a kitchen counter, mount it to a wall, or place it inside a cabinet, and that the steel holds its shape and finish with everyday use. It is listed at 15.33 x 13.09 x 2.76 inches (38.9 x 33.2 x 7.0 cm), the largest of the three Spectrum racks.

Vintage Living: a mid-sized steel rack

The Vintage Living Spice Rack has the same steel build and the same three placements as the Yumi: counter, wall or cabinet. It is listed at 14 x 11.75 x 3 inches (35.6 x 29.8 x 7.6 cm), which makes it a little smaller than the Yumi in the first two numbers and a little thicker in the last.

The Countertop or Wall Mount 3-Tier Spice Rack is made of open-wire steel. It is listed at 13.5 x 13 x 2.75 inches (34.3 x 33.0 x 7.0 cm) and can go on a counter, on a wall or in a cabinet, like the other two Spectrum racks. It is the smallest of the three by the first number.

Acrylic Spice Organizer Set: two racks and a turntable

Acrylic Spice Organizer SetSee it at sorbushome.com

The Acrylic Spice Organizer Set from Sorbus includes two 3-tier spice racks and one 9 inch lazy Susan turntable. The maker describes the acrylic racks as suited to displaying spices or condiments in a kitchen pantry, and says the lazy Susan is compact enough for a cabinet or refrigerator. Each rack measures 10 inches long, 9.25 inches wide and 4 inches high (25.4 x 23.5 x 10.2 cm); the lazy Susan measures 9 x 9 x 1 inches (22.9 x 22.9 x 2.5 cm).

3-Tier Bamboo Countertop Stand: the tall, narrow one

Freestanding 3-tier natural bamboo spice stand
Countertop Stand (3-Tier Bamboo)See it at sorbushome.com

The Countertop Stand (3-Tier Bamboo) is a freestanding bamboo stand in a natural color, with an adjustable middle shelf. It is listed at about 16.25 inches long, 7.12 inches wide and 16.25 inches tall (41.3 x 18.1 x 41.3 cm). The gap between the top tiers is 5.25 inches (13.3 cm), and between the bottom tiers it is 7.50 inches (19.1 cm). The maker calls it non-toxic and wipe-clean, and sleek enough to leave out on a counter or table.

Which spec matters for which need

A drawer. The only product here made for one is the SpiceLiner, and its numbers that matter are the 2.4 inch (6.1 cm) width and the 0.3 inch (0.8 cm) thickness. Measure the inside length and depth of your drawer; the long roll gives you material to cut to any size.

A cabinet or pantry shelf. Look at depth and height first. The SpiceStack needs 11 inches (28 cm) of depth and 8.3 inches (21.1 cm) of height. The Sorbus racks are 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) high, so they slide under a lower shelf more easily. The Spectrum racks list a smallest measurement of 3 inches (7.6 cm) or less, which may be the height, but confirm that on the maker’s page when the gap above is tight.

A wall. Only the three Spectrum racks are described as wall-mountable. For those, the two bigger measurements decide how much wall you need: 15.33 x 13.09 inches (38.9 x 33.2 cm) for the Yumi, 14 x 11.75 inches (35.6 x 29.8 cm) for the Vintage Living and 13.5 x 13 inches (34.3 x 33.0 cm) for the wire rack.

A counter. The bamboo stand’s 7.12 inch (18.1 cm) width keeps the footprint narrow, though at 16.25 inches (41.3 cm) tall it needs clear space above. The Spectrum racks also list counter use.

Counting bottles. Only two products give a number: 18 or more for the SpiceStack and 30 or more for the SpiceLiner. For the rest, count your bottles first and compare against the footprint, since the maker gives none.

Reading labels. The SpiceStack comes with 104 labels, and the Spectrum racks are described as keeping labels visible at a glance. If you have mixed bottle shapes, the SpiceStack’s adjustable dividers and the SpiceLiner’s flat layout are the two approaches built for round and square bottles together.

Materials and cleaning. The foam liner wipes clean with a damp cloth, the bamboo stand is listed as non-toxic and wipe-clean, and the steel racks are described as holding their shape and finish. Choose by the look and care you want rather than by a durability claim, because none of the makers gives a weight rating here.

Measure the space, count your bottles, and check the current price at the retailer before you decide.
